Tentative SME deal reached: Agreement would sever city's relationship with co-op

At long last, Great Falls municipal government appears to have engineered an escape from the tentacles of the bankrupt Southern Montana Electric Generation and Transmission Cooperative, and at a price that was lower than expected.
A tentative settlement of $3.25 million was announced Friday by city officials. The city will pay an amount similar to that of the bankrupt co-op’s largest member, Yellowstone Valley Electric, which reached its own escape agreement in January. If the city does escape, Southern Montana will be left with four members.
