Cities should stick to the energy basics

City government is facing a tight squeeze after losing $15 million on a failed energy venture, known for most of the last decade as Electric City Power. It’s time to close the door on this debacle, with a look back at what went wrong and what lies ahead.
One big fly in the ointment was an unwise decision by the 1997 Legislature to deregulate the energy picture in Montana. Deregulation inflated electricity prices for huge numbers of customers across the state in its wake.
